The establishment of the CSIR National Laser Centre (NLC) provides the Higher Educational Institutions (HEI’s) the opportunity of access to a large number of state-of-the-art lasers, laser diagnostic equipment and laser laboratories. The equipment was made available to the CSIR NLC through a very generous longterm lease agreement between the Nuclear Energy Corporation of South Africa (NECSA) and the CSIR NLC.

The Department of Science and Technology (DST) has, in response to the lease agreement, made additional funds available to the HEIs, for research specifically within the laser environment. This fund can be accessed via the National Research Foundation’s (NRF) Rental Pool Access Grant Scheme.
